Peter Drake

Peter Drake’s art has been featured in 28 Solo exhibitions and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections throughout the US, China and Europe including the Whitney Museum of Art, Phoenix Museum of Art, MOCA LA, Weatherspoon Art Museum and the L.A. County Museum of Art, among others.

Drake actively lectures and curates, was a curator for The Drawing Center in New York City and wrote for Flash Art Magazine. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a National Endowment for the Arts Award, a Two Trees Cultural Space Subsidy Program Grant and a MTA Arts & Design permanent public art commission for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Massapequa Station that opened to the public in 2015.

His work has been written about in Art in America, Artpulse, (t)here Magazine, Newsday, BmoreArt, Flash Art, Interview, The New York Times, Art & Antiques, Artists Magazine, Huffington Post, Time Out, Living and Sustaining a Creative Life: Essays by 40 Working Artists, Art at Eaton Center, The Figure, New York’s Underground Art Museum: MTA Arts & Design and Launching Your Art Career: A Practical Guide for Artists.

Drake maintains an active studio practice and is represented by Craighead Green Gallery, Dallas and Linda Warren Projects, Chicago / Los Angeles.

Drake is presently the Provost at the New York Academy of Art, a progressive figurative and representational graduate program in lower Manhattan. He continues to be a Thesis Advisor and taught previously at Parsons the New School for Design, SVA, and MICA. Drake received his BFA from Pratt Institute.

Peter Drake was born and raised in Garden City, Long Island and lives in Manhattan.

Dumbo Open Studios returns and I’ll be opening my space on April 13 & 14, 2024.

Meet me and tour 150+ art studios, gallery exhibitions, and more throughout DUMBO, Brooklyn. 

Peter Drake Studio, 55 Washington St., Brooklyn, NY 11201

On April 13 + 14, 1–6pm artists in DUMBO will open their doors to the public as a part of DUMBO Open Studios, giving visitors a look into studios and work spaces across the Brooklyn waterfront. DUMBO has been the epicenter of Brooklyn’s art community since the 1970’s.

DUMBO Open Studios is a project presented by Art in DUMBO, a resource for art events, happenings, galleries and residency programs.

AMONG FRIENDS is back for #4.
Organized by Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Beth Dary & Patricia Fabricant. Inspired by the Robert Rauschenberg artwork “Hiccups,” AMONG FRIENDS reflects and responds to the strength and illumination we find through art, friendship and community. Over 200 pieces of 9 x 7” paper, each worked on by a different artist, zipped together into one continuous, exuberant piece.

Ceramic and glass mosaic, laminated glass

Artist Peter Drake’s father was a model train enthusiast who built villages for his HO and Lionel trains. He also maintained a collection of painted lead toy figures for his train sets, from the 1930’s era in which the Massapequa Station was originally constructed. Using the toys as inspiration, Drake created paintings of them in various poses waiting for their trains.

“Inside Interiors” curated by Romanov Grave for Russell Steele Antiques

“Inside Interiors” is a nimble juxtaposition of design, furniture, painting, sculpture and photography in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement of the nineteenth century. This exhibition is hosted by Russell Steele, a much-admired dealer for collectors in the decorative and fine arts, and curated by Romanov Grave, an artist collective that has been producing online publications and curating exhibitions since 2010.
